A recent post on Slashdot asked readers to list the essential items in a data center manager’s toolkit. The responses were funny, and really informative — which lead us to try to compile a list of indispensable items in the data center. Here’s the best of the list from Slashdot readers:
Safety First: Ear protection, O2 gas masks, glow in the dark emergency arrows on the floor;
Water event! As many cheap tarps as you can afford;
Shop vac;
Portable air conditioner, fans and door wedges;
List of what UPS systems take what batteries — general UPS and generator maintenance info;
Screwdrivers, Leatherman or other multi-tool with spare cage nuts and bolts;
Spare cabling connectors and cable testers;
Labeling tool or label system;
Extra perforated and non-perforated floor tiles;
Whiskey, blow torch, duct tape [my suggestions].
What other items should be on this list?

I’ve always kept 2 rubber tipped hammers to coax stubborn doors, or equipment into place.

* Flashlight
* Fluke Multimeter & Amp-clamp
* Laser temperature guage
* An inventory of fiber raceway, all-thread, and uni-strut
* Hammer drill & Sawzall
* 30 Amp twist lock power strips
* Expansion bolts & 5lb short handle sledge hammer
(forget the raised floor, go solid and you’ll never look back!)
* Phone numbers of HVAC tech, Electrician, Diesel tech, Fuel Distributor, and Boss on speed dial.

A cell phone loaded with games to play while you are wasting time for the server to re-install and recover all the lost files.

I’d keep 1) Make Model & Serial Number information of everything
2) the manufacturer’s 800 number & hours of operation and
if these are not available 3) a sledgehammer and my insurance broker’s home number and last night’s backup.

As cooling becomes a key operational concern don’t skimp on equipment, invest in the best telemetary you can find…for example a sheet of paper will confirm positive airflow at the floor , cabinet exhaust and CRAC inputs. Not pretty but very, very effective. Apologies in advance to manufacturers of mutli function measurement devices

8. I would say, fire extinguisher at the door
9. trolley to move heavy things around
10. Temperature monitoring with alarm notification to manager on four corners
11. Lifter for the raise floors
12. Power Voltage Tester
13. Main and Exit door key duplicate
13. Shutdown and start-up procedure of systems inside the data center
14. Moving Tables and Chairs
15. Extension power cords
16. Most important thing to have in the data center are the servers and equipment to protect….he he he .. all of the above would be nothing is the manager doesnt have anything to protect.
